I'd prefer to have the ability to have this type of application on the right hand side of the blog as a permanent feature. As it is I can only see it's use in highlighting books that are topical and used within a reader's advisory blog for instance because it disappears down the page as each new blog entry is made.

Utube deprived!

I've mucked around way too much on the week 6 module. For a start I can't view anything on Utube and our IT guys say the site isn't blocked. They haven't come back to me with any other possible answer to my problem and right now is a bad time because they're updating all council computers. So my quest to find out why I can't view any videos may not be on top of their list of priorities right now.

Using the public access computers was not an option so I viewed a few videos from home and came across a pair of really funny guys lip-syncing the ebay song by Weird Al Yankovich. This video used a lot of the elements which I think captured today's culture perfectly, lip-syncing, ebay, amateur video and the Internet.

So now I had the perfect video but when I followed the instructions to embed the very long address into my post it all ended in tears. I couldn't work it out. Why was only half of the address showing up? Ahhh, but then I saw the 'Edit Html' tab and something clicked inside my dusty brain. This address looks like html, duh! So I paste the address here and what do you know, it worked. I'm a star and I think I'm extremely clever. On to week 7........

Wikis for group projects

Firstly, I didn't know what a wiki was so I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it's like a community notice board where everyone adds what they know on a subject. I've used Wikipedia before but to me it was just like a 'yahoo' or any other similar large site run by very experienced computer gurus. After taking a look around at more modest wikis I can see how a wiki can be used for almost anything.

At work at the moment we are about to implement a 'Council Information System'. Before this is implemented however, all staff need to know what's going on and how it will affect their work etc. To date, the communication between staff and the team involved with the processes of the new system have been really sparse, to not a all. I can see a wiki being very useful for projects like this. Information added daily under different headings so the staff can keep up to date with what's going on. Something like an Intranet.

I like this application very much. I've often marvelled at the interesting content of some special interest blogs and how they find the time to search for relevant articles on a daily basis. Having this much information coming at you through the RSS feeds is like dipping into a database. I can think of a million ways this can be used for libraries.

I like the idea of setting up a local writer's blog and have the writers post their work on the blog. The library could keep them informed of competitions, new books on writing or anything that would be of interest to them. Subscribing to a list of literary blogs would give the library lots of information to choose from to post on the blog and make it interesting for the writers to keep participating.

I finally worked out how to download a photo from Flickr thanks to a tip from Ellen on the Library 2.0 blog. I needed to look for the 'blog this' in very tiny print at the top of the photo then register my blog with google. Anyway I just followed the prompts and said yes to everything....could have been giving permission to hack my computer : ) But hey, what a photo!! A solution to privacy issues hehehe!

It's a late start but I'm off and running now. I'm both excited and overwhelmed by all the applications that can be used to communicate on the web but the Library 2.0 program should provide me with the step-by-step structure that I think works best with my way of learning anything. I like to see what can be done and copy it.

Major flaw has been discovered though, I can't view the videos on Utube! Our IT department asures me the site isn't locked but the video just doesn't load, they blame the bandwidth. I've worked around it so far, but it's kinda like missing parts of a conversation (the good bits).
